Mission & Vision

The very seed of Zahra Foundation lies in the belief that it is as important to give as it is to receive. Zahra Foundation’s philosophy also envisioned the fact that education is the most important tool in poverty eradication and empowering the poor and downtrodden and everything that is a hindrance in the way of education and empowerment needs to be addressed and solved.

Objectives

To provide free remedial classes (2 hours/day) to the poor and underprivileged children living in
the slums of Okhla region. To mainstream drop out children into formal education by providing them tuition support.

Teachers Training

Six class 10th students of Zahra Educational Centre have been promoted to assist the teachers
of class 1st and class 2nd for one hour/day on a monthly stipend of ₹ 3000.
The innovative idea came as a solution to the problem when parents of these students wanted
to discontinue the Education of these students so that they can either get married or work and
support them financially.

“Almost all slum areas in India, are a breeding ground for poverty, illiteracy, exploitation, negligence, destitution and disease.”

In the last five years, team Zahra has provided free education support to about 400 children who hail from the socially and economically marginalized background. All the children come from families where parent’s major concern is to get two-time meal rather than thinking of education for their wards. Densely populated areas, like the slums where these kids live have no resources even for basic sustenance.

Conditions are so poor and supply so scarce that students and parents barely have the motivation to even think of education. In addition to this, watching their parents struggling for money and living the life of daily struggle have made these kids more interested in earning at the earliest rather than giving time and attention towards education. Fighting and abusing amongst children is a common phenomenon in the area. These slums are a breeding ground for poverty, exploitation, negligence, destitution and disease. There is a large number of children who never seen school, who either stay at their home to take care of their siblings or they go work as child labors. The main reason is poor access to education, resulting in these children being employed in the labor sector at a young age. Seeking to supplement family income, children work in different and distant locations and are often victims of substance abuse as well, hence, there is a constant threat that children can become delinquent.

Team Zahra after noticing the miserable condition of children living in these areas decided to work for creating an atmosphere of learning and reading with a belief that education is a major tool for their poverty eradication and empowerment. We worked intensively and gave our best to provide the children education support, educated them on discipline and imparted in them life skills which helped them to deal effectively with demands and challenges of everyday life.

For children and their parents, Zahra Foundation’s effort was the new ray of hope. In the words of Tanzeem, a student, “Zahra Foundation is the best thing that has happened in my life”. The parents were skeptical at first but as they start seeing the positive changes in their wards; be it in academia or in personality they shed their inhibition and started sending their children regularly to the centre. Children too participated enthusiastically and regularly with Zahra Foundation sharing 2-3 hours a day learning and educating themselves. Now, those children can match any common educated children in style, knowledge, behavior except clothes and future insecurity.
